Who is Sunny?

Hello, hellllloooo ! I wanted to share a little bit about myself [and my journey] to give you insight about who I am, and what I’m about.

For starters, I’m a New York Native with ancestral roots from the Caribbean. As you get to know me a little more, you’ll see the influence shine through my business. My passion for hair began when I was just a little girl. I would see the women in my family bunched up in the bathroom sharing one tiny mirror, blowing out their hair and applying lipstick when it was time to go out. Other times they would gather my cousins and I would get together occasionally in the living room sitting on the floor while our hair was blown out one by one. The feeling of both empowerment and satisfaction that came to us all when our hair was neatly pressed and for them, when they were dolled up was something that always stuck with me. I wanted to be that person making people feel that sense of empowerment, and confidence. I decided to take it up a notch in 2017/2018, I was fresh out of beauty school and wasn’t sure of which direction I wanted to go in the industry. I think it’s also important to mention that at this very same time, I was in the middle of transitioning my hair from heat damage because this is when I came across Devachan Salon and decided to not only join the company, but devote myself to learning the art of curly hair. Coils, the tightest curl on the curl spectrum-but also the blueprint of all curls.

Around the same time [2017/2018] I was rediscovering my natural curl pattern, discovering my place in the industry, I was also discovering my spirituality. Not too long after that I started to introduce myself to all the things that were considered “taboo” - things like tarot, astrology, crystals, and the medicinal properties of herbalism. Finding God in all the places I was told not to look in essentially. As time progressed, I found myself wanting to learn expand my mind and views more hungry to not only learn more but to also spread the knowledge I’ve come across.

I began learning about the medicinal properties of herbs, and how plants can be medicine. Through this, my very first hair oil was born. With the learns and lessons that came with this project, I decided to take more notes, and expand. Conjures, because I don’t just randomly pick herbs and oils and put them into labeled bottles. There’s lots of magic and science that’s backed up by this ;) .

For a long time, I wanted to keep the two passions seperated not sure how people would feel about my views. But as time progressed, I found myself not being able to shut up on said topics and was surprised at how many of my clients shared the same views. As I delve deeper into educating myself, picking up gems from some of my mutuals , and sharing bits and pieces of my own gifts with those around me it became abundantly clear that I was going to mesh my passions together and make my own lane and place in the industry.

And now we have Sunny, the owner of Coils and Conjures. Blending my passions, and sharing my magic with you all.

I want to give a shout out to the women in my family who taught the alchemy of beauty, and how to use my hands to heal in more than one way.

A special thank you to my best friend Pricsilla, who received the download of my hair oils when it was just an idea in my head and wasn’t sure if I even wanted to go forward with it. She also received the download of the very name of this business back when I didn’t even know it would replace ‘Sunnystyledit’ . Through it all she has been my biggest cheerleader. Most gratitude to you.

A big thank you to my mentor Susan, who molded me into the stylist I am today, and taught me the art of ‘kissing every curl’ . I couldn’t have chosen a better mentor.

Also, a special thank you to my clients. I cannot thank you guys enough for the constant love and support through every phase of my business. You guys have been great, I only hope to continue to show up for you all the same way you guys show up for me.

xoxo,

Sunny :*
